Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) Solution

System Overview

A compact range provides a method for illuminating a device under test (DUT) with a uniform plane wave at a distance much shorter than the approximate far-field distance. A compact range uses a source antenna to radiate a spherical wave and one or more reflectors to transform this spherical wave into a plane wave.

Based on geometrical optics principles, the parabolic reflector must be precisely designed to achieve the expected performance over a wide frequency range: from low frequencies where the compact range reflector is only a few wavelengths in size, up to high frequencies where the reflector size can be hundreds of wavelengths. Additionally, the feed horn antenna and its relative position to the reflector, the layout of the absorbers in the anechoic chamber, and the distance between the absorbers and the reflector must also be considered.

Rolled Edge Reflector

The edge of the reflector is designed with a smooth transition in curvature from the parabolic center to the convex edge. The diffraction from a rolled edge reflector is less than that of a serrated edge reflector, making it particularly suitable for high-precision measurements of low-sidelobe antennas. With its precisely defined continuous edge, it is also especially suitable for applications in the 76-81 GHz frequency range.

CATR Feed
To achieve the highest test zone performance, a compact range is typically illuminated by a corrugated horn antenna. We offer various types of corrugated and choke horn antennas, allowing for a choice between amplitude taper, amplitude ripple, and quiet zone size. Alternatively, broadband horn antennas can be used when a continuous wide frequency band is required.
Most feeds are available in single and dual linear polarization models. Circular polarization is usually calculated from two linear polarizations, but circularly polarized feeds can also be used.

Ruidi Measurement & Control has launched a dedicated compact range test reflector system for 4D millimeter-wave radar testing. It includes a reflector antenna, feed element, anechoic chamber system, radar target simulator, test control unit, and dedicated spatial calibration components. This system meets the testing demands for far-field pattern measurement, amplitude and phase calibration, and target simulation calibration within a limited space during the mass production of 4D millimeter-wave radars, significantly reducing the difficulty of testing them.
